Front Row, Baby?

… Hello again there…

First of all, because Coco Chanel quote about classy and fabulous fashion thingy is too popular to become a beginning, so I’ll try something different. Well it’s still quote anyway, but it’s different person.

If you ever read Canadian novel Anne of Green Gables, I’m sure you know her. Lucy Maud Montgomery –or usually write as L. M. Montgomery- said on one of her novel, that it is ever so much easier to be good if your clothes are fashionable.

Well absolutely agree with you, Montgomery! Fashion is more than outfit. It can be fun, and it can be super power serious matter in the other hand, but still fun for sure. It’s why fashion makes me stirred sometimes. Moreover, it’s happened a couple weeks ago.

I’m on my weekday duty. I should write about a fashion show of Dressmaking Education 2011 Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) Bandung. This event called Accelefashion. They had a tagline “Step up to the next level”. Yes, they want to give an acceleration on Bandung’s fashion progress through this fashion show.

Honestly I’m not so expert on this fashion thingy. Then as usual, I need to read more the day before. As I know, Accelefashion’s such a final tribute for their Event Organizer class. There’s haute couture section on it, and I’m afraid I’ll be on fashion disaster region if I attend it on my daily-normal-journalist-outfit-with-slipper. So, I act upon the rule. Voila! I had no shock culture, but I got running problem. My running ability’s highly decreasing. I wore long sleeves dress, legging, and wedges. Oh! A hijab too of course. It doesn’t matter anyway.

Like normal human being, journalist can dress up too. They’ll do it if they want. Let’s say there’s nothing wrong with my outfit that day.The only wrong about my coverage this time is my editor. He said the venue’s on Grha Manggala Siliwangi, but surprisingly…the real venue’s at Grha Tirta Siliwangi. Thanks God I brought my slipper, so I didn’t need to walk on my wedges lonely nobly along the road.

Unfortunately I was too late, but fortunately the opening ceremony was too late more than me. I got the right dress code that day, and met awesome people like Medina Zein and Diana DNC. A lot of fashionistas and fashionistos around of course. Oh, Malik Moestaram attended too.

It’s not a huge event, but it’s powerful enough for getting attention from people who concern about fashion in Bandung. There’s red carpet along the corridor. Then also you would hear tap…tap…tap… all the time from boots and high heels far away outside the hall. I felt a little bit weird with my sight, because all the people were wearing black and white. I was wearing turquoise –and black of course- because I obey the rule. Ah, you don’t care about it, do you.

Short in time, it’s quite fun when you realize that there are so much fashion statements you could find in one place at a such event. Why? Because I feel Bandung atmosphere more than usual. It’s not Paris, or Milan, or Japan, but it’s Bandung. It has its own style as fab as its own story.

Anyway, it’s my first time sitting in front row. It’s not so exciting like what I imagined before, but I got enough shots for my next day deadline.

Over all, I just realize something that

“It doesn’t matter if you’re journalist or not, taking less care of appearance is a big mistake”

So please. Being journalist doesn’t mean that it’s ok for wearing T-shirt on a formal ceremony, or it’s okay for wearing ripped jeans on a summit conference. You can still wear it anyway, but in proper occasion. Journalist is still human being. journalist have freedom, but not the one who take liberties.

Forte For Sure

When did the last time you listen to classic music? Or… when did the last time you hear it?

May be you hear it when you play game online. Well if you often listen to it, that’s great. People commonly love pop or any mainstream songs on billboard chart. Don’t be common, that’s not fun at all.

Well, last time, I had to make story about a festival named FORTE. It’s held by ITB Student Orchestra annually. So if you’ve missed it this year, you can save your date on April next year. It used to be a concert before. The committee change it, because nowadays people love going to festival more than attending classic music concert.

They want to prove that classic music is not an old fashion thingy. There’re two venue at the festival. First is bazaar, and the second is for the concert. Let’s say… I have no idea about any classic song. But trust me, I enjoyed the concert. Before it’s too far, sorry for no stage photo of the concert. Some reasons hold me to keep it.
the rehearsal before chamber concert session of Forte at Aula Barat ITB
Back to story, they gave great performance of playing various background music of famous games like The Sims and Final Fantasy VIII. They played various soundtrack of famous films too. My favorite song from the whole concert is Spain by Chick Korea. It’s the only original classic song that I know for a couple years ago. It’s famous enough because many of jazz artist cover it. One of them –you know it may be- is Al Jerrau with his song I can Recall.

Besides great songs, I met a great person to interview. He’s Jubing Kristianto, an Indonesia solo acoustic fingerstyle guitarist. He ever worked as a journalist before. May be that’s why his answers are very neat. He offered me a cup of hot cappuccino too. I refused it because I already had enough coffee for today We had a great talk after interview about music, college, journalism thingy, and of course about both of us. For Jubing’s fans out there, they choose the right person.
me and Jubing Kristianto during the interview

Oh! by the way… I was almost late going for interviewing Jubing Kristianto that day. Why? Because I met my classmate and her high school bestfriend. They’re talkative. That’s good for some reason for sure. So, you can say I got new friend that day.

We had a little chat, and little bit longer chat further at a great coffee bar on town. It’s GENERAL.CO at The Trik Park – Paskal Hypersquare, Jl. Pasirkaliki no. 25-27, Bandung, West Java. It’s under TSVC Establishment label. This label quite popular with their vintage interior. This café is just awesome with their full outdoor section. And of course I choose to sit there because it’s not a rainy day outside.

The atmosphere is so cozy and relaxing. I have my frozen crème brulee, and it’s not over sweet at all, it’s just awesome. Even coffee lover needs to taste flavored coffee, doesn’t it. I wanna order piccolo latte, but the frozen crème brulle seems right to try. Oh, it’s a right place for taking pictures anyway.

The Art of Prologue by

Are you a fast runner?
Are you great for staying awake?
No? really?
It’s OK then, because at college, you’ll learn how to run fast, how to be hunger-proof, and how to be a nocturnal. CMIIW. Yes, I'll start this first morning talking about college life, because it's holiday already. just in case you forget how to be a student in real. this blog will be full of story behind my coverage next.

Before I continue, lemme show you some of my work that makes me paid. Sorry not to sorry about no caption.

Well, back to college talk, it’s definitely wrong if you say college students have great power. They don’t.

Just like Tsugumi Ohba ever wrote on Death Note Vol.4, that college is fun as long as you don’t die.

For me –based on my field of experience and my frame of reference- we just have creativity. Yeah. Especially a creativity for finding a way to learn.

I repeat, my default weapon in college is just creativity. I can’t get what I wanna learn from my lecturer, not even at class. I don’t know about other majors, but I do really know about mine –journalism study-.

So, I’m sure that you think I learn about how to write news, how to interview people, how to run, how to fight with deadline, how to keep awake till midnight, and etc. Yep! If you think so, you right… but I don’t get in on my desk. Not really get it.

My teachers never teach about all of it ever.  So what do they do? They just give the basic rule, and not the way how to stay in the basic rule. Beside that, well, they teach me –and my friends- about how to be open mind and sensitive person, the end.

Oh, they always ask too, like… “Are you sure wanna be a journalist?”, “Being a journalist huh? Really?”

Well, that’s true. It’s like…If I’m a journalist, I should be an idealist, but I need to be capitalist in a same time. At college, what we usually do is discussing. If I didn’t read newspaper, or watching television, I’ll be the one who sit in silence at class. The one thing we do at class is discussing the last or the hottest issue such as artist’ gossip, coming up films, music, fashion, and etc. Farther, the teacher ask to discuss a super-random-undefined issue from politic or economic desk . That’s so torturing for hours.

That’s why, communication science students always up to date. Uhm… not really truly.

No Text Book

Then, where do I learn about how to write news, how to interview people, how to run, how to fight with deadline, how to keep awake till midnight, and etc? It’s on the field. It’s kinda learning by doing. I go to new places, I meet new faces, and I enter various space.

It’s totally a joy when my teacher cancels my 8 a.m. class, but it’s a nightmare when my informant cancels the interview schedule. Yes, I meet lots artist, but come on! It’s not about the person, but the story behind.

Chuck Palahniuk ever wrote in Invisible Monsters, that if you tell folks you’re a college student, folks are so impressed. You can be a student in anything and not have to know anything.

Now, it’s not about impressing somebody. My daily talks about how far the story can impress me. I need to be focus and paying attention to all little things that can increase the news value. I should become a listener and a researcher at the same time. I need to be the public, I need to be a reader, and I need to be so objective as hell.

It seems that I’m writing too far. If I may give suggestion…
“Don’t try to remember text book. Just, try to make questions about it.”

oh! You need to earn money too. no need to work. just earn money. well I do need money cause I'm on my highest level as a greedy student. that's why I get paid. creativity works so well.

amazing story of people and places I've ever met
